Unit Six: Exploring What Colleges Offer

Now you will explore how colleges divide knowledge into academic departments, majors, courses, and degrees. Before deciding what to label your learning, you will explore the labels that higher education institutions apply to learning that's similar to yours. As you explore, you will discover that there are many ways to approaching one topic. Take the examples of honeybees: One college might offer a course in cultivating hives for honey; the biology department at another college might offer a course that studies the bees themselves; and at a third institution, honeybees might be part of a holistic health course on natural remedies. The more you explore what colleges offer, the easier it will be to determine how to describe and categorize your own learning.

After completing this unit, you should be able to
- Relate your learning to course descriptions at higher learning institutions
- Reading: You will read course descriptions from various colleges and universities.
- Discussion Questions: You will discuss your own learning style and compare it to one of the theories upon which PLA is based.
- Project: You will select two areas in which you think you have college-level knowledge and search for college courses with similar content.
