folderAs we mentioned before, this laboratory course has been specifically designed so that you can complete all of the experiments at home. Listed here for your convenience is a list of supplies by laboratory module. If you don't already have these items, you should be able to purchase them at your local supermarket or hardware store.

   
   
  Module D: Earth and Air (Labs 7 and 8)

Lab 7 Soil Composition

  • Glass jar
  • Soil sample from your backyard
  • Metric ruler

Lab 8 The Atmosphere and the Greenhouse Effect

  • Three thermometers
  • Two zip-lock bags
  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Cleanser with ammonia
  • Empty water or soda bottle
  • Balloon or condom
  • Rubber band
 
Module A: Populations (Labs 1 and 2)

Lab 1 Population Size Experiment

  • A jar, bag or container
  • Three handfuls of dry beans
  • A Sharpie permanent marker

Lab 2 Life Table Procedure

  • Fourteen uninterrupted days of newspaper obituaries, in sequence

Lab 3 Home Audit Experiment

  • Some or all of your electricity bills
  • Some or all of your natural gas/heating oil bills

  • Some or all of your friend's natural gas/heating oil bills
 

Module E: Alternative Energy (Lab 9 and 10)

Lab 9 Biodiesel

  • Small metal can
  • Measuring cup
  • Thermometer
  • Peanut
  • Grasping tongs
  • Needle or long pin
  • Cork
  • Long match or lighter
  • Small piece of wood or a pencil

Lab 10 Solar Energy

  • Small metal can
  • Measuring cup
  • Thermometer
  • Aluminum foil
  • Cardboard
  • Scissors

Module C: Carbon Dioxide (Labs 5 and 6)

Lab 5: Observing Carbon Dioxide

  • Head of red cabbage
  • Colander
  • Bowl
  • Vinegar or lemon juice
  • Baking soda
  • Cleanser with ammonia
  • Empty water or soda bottle
  • Balloon or condom
  • Rubber band
  • Drinking straw

Lab 6: Car Exhaust

  • Automobile (yours or a friend's)
  • Paper funnel
    • heavy paper or light cardboard
    • strong tape
